The Ultimate Baby Bath Time Checklist for Dads

Bathing a baby sounds simple until you're holding a wet, slippery, screaming human the size of a football over warm water and realizing you forgot the towel on the other side of the room. Bath time is equal parts hygiene, bonding, and panic. This checklist makes sure everything is within reach before the water starts running.

Use this checklist every bath time until you've got the process down cold. Especially useful the first few weeks when sponge baths feel like performing surgery with oven mitts.

Dad Pro Tips

  • #1If your baby screams during baths, try getting in the tub with them. Skin-to-skin in warm water is calming and you're more stable than a baby tub. Just make sure someone hands you the baby and takes them when you're done.
  • #2A warm washcloth draped over baby's chest during the bath keeps them warm and calm. Re-dip it in warm water every minute or so. This one trick reduced bath time screaming by about 80% for most dads.
  • #3You don't need to bathe a baby every day — 2-3 times a week is fine for newborns. More than that dries out their skin. Spot clean the important areas (face, neck, diaper zone) daily with a washcloth.
