The Ultimate Dad Diaper Bag Checklist

Your partner's diaper bag has 47 items organized in labeled pouches. Yours is a backpack with some diapers loose at the bottom and a granola bar from 2019. There's a middle ground. You don't need to pack for a week-long expedition, but showing up at the park with zero wipes is how legends of bad dad outings are born. This checklist is your packing list for actually being prepared.

Use this checklist to pack your bag once, then do a 2-minute restock check before every outing. Restock when you get home while you still remember what you used.

The Non-Negotiables — Always in the Bag

Diapers — at least 1 per hour you'll be out, plus 2 extrasMust have

Plastic bags — 2-3 gallon ziplock bagsMust have

For dirty diapers when there's no trash can, for soiled clothes, for containing the smell. Ziplock bags are the unsung hero of the diaper bag. Never leave home without them.

Diaper cream — small travel tubeMust have

Rash doesn't wait until you get home. A small tube of zinc oxide cream takes up minimal space and prevents a minor redness from becoming a full-blown rash.

Feeding Supplies

Bottle with pre-measured formula or pumped milk in an insulated pocketMust have

If bottle feeding, have one ready. A formula dispenser with pre-measured portions lets you mix on the go. An insulated pocket keeps milk at a safe temperature longer.

Comfort & Entertainment

If your baby uses one, losing the pacifier in public is an emergency. Keep a backup in a case so it stays clean. Pacifier clips that attach to clothing prevent drops.

A snack for yourselfRecommended

You always remember to pack snacks for the baby and forget about yourself. A granola bar or trail mix keeps you from getting hangry while managing a baby all afternoon.

Hand sanitizerMust have

After diaper changes, before feeding, after the playground — hand sanitizer bridges the gap when there's no sink. Travel-size clips to the bag.
